, a cyclone has battered the southern india states. many of the coastal areas are pretty low lying, and up to 100,000 people have had to be evacuated. we understand seven people have been killed. five sailors also missing after an oil tanker ran aground off the city of chanai. our correspondent is there. >> a lot of the crew were rescued, some of them yesterday, a few early this morning, when two helicopters were able to get some of them off that ship. but five sailors are still missing. they've been missing since yesterday. in fact, there's growing concern now over their safety quite simply because it's been something like 20 hours since it went missing. the wind here has picked up a bit, but it's knock like the 100-kilometer winds that we experienced when the cyclone first made landfall yesterday. a lot of people, as you can see, are out on the beach, mainly to look at the ship mind me. there's a lot of oil on that tanker, and they are worried as it drifts closer to shore, they're concerned that some of that oil might actually come out of that ship and create an even bigger problem. >> h

also affected india. seven people were killed when a cyclone struck the southeast coast. the rescue operation is under way for six sailors still missing after an oil tanker ran aground. from there, we've received this report. >> the feeling of the storm lashing india's east coast. out at sea, an oil tanker that ran aground when the cyclone struck. most of its 37 crew members have been rescued, but some are still missing. throughout the day, coast guard rescue teams have been in action, trying to find the remaining sailors. now they are preparing to tow the ship back to sea before it drifts further, creating an oil slick. the cyclone made landfall on wednesday, lashing the coast with rain and high winds with speeds of up to 100 kilometers per hour. power lines were brought down, and roads have been damaged, but the loss of life has been kept to a minimum. along the coast in its many fishing villages, some signs of the storms are gone -- fishermen and their families have gone to higher ground. now they are waiting. >> the worst of the storm is now behind us. for many of these people,

online. today the u.s. economy accounts for 23% of the world's economy and india is 7. in 2030, according to the oecd predictions, china will be 29% of the world economy, the u.s. will be 18 and india will be 11. and those are, i think, really worthwhile numbers to keep in our mind as we talk about u.s. competitiveness in the world economy, because we're entering this entirely new era where the u.s. is going to be a big player in the world economy but no longer the preeminent, the very largest one, and i think that brings real challenges and requires a whole new way of thinking. so my opening remarks, steve was introduced, i think quite rightly, as a guy who i hope is getting cases of champagne and bouquets of flowers from the white house. because on certain readings you could say, you know, he's the guy who got the president reelected. that means, i believe, he has great insight into what obama's second term economic policy will be -- [laughter] and the big question on the agenda which i think certainly already tremendous bearing on u.s., on the u.s. domestic economy and, therefore, u.s.

take. growing up in the india in the 1960s and '70s, ales thought of america as the future. it was the place where the newest technology, the best gadgets, the latest fads seemed to originate. seemingly exotic political causes, women's liberation, gay rights, ageism, always seemed to get their start on the streets of the united states orthopedic in the courts and legislatures. for me, tuesday's election brought back that sense of america as the future. the presidential race has been discussed as one that was about nothing with no message or mandate, but i don't think that's true. put aside the re-election of barack obama and consider what else happened this week. three states voted to legalize same-sex marriage, which is the civil rights cause of our times. one day we will look back and wonder how people could have been so willing to deny equal treatment under the law to a small minority. and tuesday will stand as one of the most important moments marking the end of that cruelty. two other states voted to legalize recreational use of marijuana, which will mark the beginning
